Kept in Seasons of Danger (Part 1)

Photo by Ray Bilcliff on Pexels.com

We live in dangerous times. Covid19 has spread its lethal tentacles all over the world. It has silently crept in the hovels of the poor and into the mansions of the rich, powerful and famous. The virus is not a respecter of persons. Fear abounds. None can escape the touch of its cold hand.

How should a Christian live in “Seasons of Danger”?  The advice the Puritan John Flavel (1628-1691) gave to Christians in England long ago,  is relevant today.  Here is just a snippet of that advice.

Understand that everything is in the hand of God. Get this thought well settled in your heart and it will “guard you against slavish fears.”

Remember that God, in whose hands you are, is your Father. Christ is King and Supreme Lord. You are the apple of His eye. He loves you most tenderly. Understand this and you will quickly say, “Return unto your rest, O my soul.”

Then

You will soon sing “in the midst of danger, “The Lord is King of all the earth, sing praise with understanding.”

Simple yet profoundly true.

Praise the Lord

Has God tapped on your shoulder?

And thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.

Imagine

You have just left on a long journey. You are to be away for a long, long time. Where you are there are no cell phones. No WhatsApp. No FaceTime. No eMail. No communication at all.

Question

Is there anything you regret you did not tell someone you love?

The Old Lady and the tiny Bird: A Lesson

Photo by Chris Czermak on Pexels.com

Once upon a time in a beautiful valley in the mountains of Europe there was a small village. In the village lived an old lady. She had the reputation for being very wise. People in the village often used to go to her and ask her for advice.

In the same village there also lived two young boys. Despite the fact that they were not living in the age of Professor Google, they nevertheless had reached the age of infinite wisdom. There was not much they did not know (or so they thought).

One day the two boys decided to test the wisdom of the old lady to see how smart she really was. They were sure they could catch her out. Easily. This is what they did.

They caught a small bird. A bird so small it could fit into the palm of their hands. They told their friends about their plan. “That old lady does not know much. She is really old fashioned. Here is what we are going to do. I am going to put this bird in the palm of my hands. Then we are going to visit the old lady. We will tell her that I have a tiny bird hidden in my hands. Then I am going to ask her if the little bird in my hands is dead or alive. If she says the bird is dead I will open my hands and the bird will fly away. She will be proved wrong. If she says the bird is alive, I well crush the bird with my hands and show her the dead bird. She will be proved wrong. I wonder what the smart old lady will say. Whatever she says, she will be wrong. She can’t win!.”

The other children listening were very impressed with this clever plan to show the famous old lady could be wrong. They all trooped along with the two boys and the little bird to watch the old lady being caught out.

The two boys with the bird arrived at the old lady’s cottage. Plenty of other children were watching.

At the door of the cottage, the two boys presented their challenge to the old lady: “Tell us if the bird is alive or dead”

There was a hush. The old lady looked carefully at the two boys.

One of the watching children whispered, “She doesn’t know”.

At last the old lady spoke. “It is completely in your hands whether the bird will live of die. I repeat: The bird’s life is completely in your hands. It is your choice.”

There was just silence.

The two boys and the watching children were amazed at the old lady’s wise answer. It is a story they remembered and spoke about for the rest of their lives.

The take away

We all have great trans-formative power. When faced with a situation, good or bad, we have a choice. By what we do, we can make a situation better or worse. How a situation evolves is very much in our hands. Such is our power of transformation.Take care. Be safe.

The Salutation of the Dawn

No, this is not a recently discovered painting by Turner! It is a photo taken by our friend, artist Professor Estelle Marais. The picture is of sunrise over the harbour in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on 7 June 2020.

Silhouetted against the rising sun is a harbour crane, affectionately described by Estelle as “The Harbour Giraffe walking into the sun this morning”.

Estelle always finds the welcoming dawn encouraging and inspiring.

This wonderful photograph is a powerful reminder of Kalidasa’s greatly loved poem “Look to this Day”:

Look To This Day

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!

Thank you Kalidasa and Estelle

God’s reply to a call for help

Photo by Anna Shvets on Pexels.com

A person looked up into the heavens and cried:

“God, there is so much anger and grief and loss in your world.”

“Why don’t you send help?”

God replied:

“I did send help”

“I sent you.”

Inconvenient Truth vs Comfortable truth diagram

When choosing between Inconvenient Truth and Comfortable truth the choice is up to each of us.

Consider this diagram and read the explanation below the diagram.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_0953.jpg
  • Most people have decided in advance what they will decide (Person already running right).
  • Following “Comfortable truth” is dangerous (Red).
  • People following “Comfortable truth” may not have the courage (yellow) to face up to “Inconvenient Truth”.
  • “Comfortable truth” is “truth” not fully investigated (lower case “t”)
  • Following “Inconvenient Truth” in the long run leads to positive growth (Green).
  • Well researched truth is “Truth” (Upper case “T”)
  • Relatively few people have the courage to follow “Inconvenient Truth”.

Potato Peeling Secret

How to use a potato peeler in a different way.

I tried this during the lock down.

It works!

Almost no more holding the potato in one hand and peeling towards it with a sharp knife or sharp potato peeler.

Here is what you need:

  • A chopping board
  • A potato peeler
  • A knife (to cut the potato in half)
  • A potato (of course!)
This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is img_3182.jpg

First cut the potato in half.

Next – see picture below

Place the half potato on the board. and rest the potato peeler on the table (as shown below) with the blade of the peeler resting on the board and on the side of the potato. Rotate the potato clockwise with the left hand against the potato peeler blade. The potato will peel easily and quickly

Last – see picture below

Repeat with the peeler resting on the board. The peeling will continue one layer up.

You are done except for a little trimming at top and bottom.

Good luck
