Crab saved on the golf course

Picture John Bartels

While exercising our German Shepherd on a local golf course late this afternoon we came upon this large crab. You can see how big the crab was by comparing it with the golf cap (yes it is a Master’s cap. Bought on the Wednesday practice day).

Now, back to the crab! It was on a fairway between two small dams/water hazards. Not a safe place for the crab. Plenty of other dogs around. At least 70 meters to the safety of the nearest dam.

The crab became quite defensive when it realized I had taken an interest in it. Stood up! Waved its pincers at me. “Watch it, you with the iPhone!”

Good luck was on the side of the crab. A fellow dog walker who is a nature lover then arrived. She was kind enough to take off her jacket and use it to pick up the crab. She took it to the nearer of the two small dams where it was released. Away from danger at last! The crab scuttled off and hid among some rocks about 2 paces from the water.”You can’t get me now!”

Speckled mousebird nest destroyed in storm ðŸ˜¥

Photo A Hannington

A few days ago, a gale, accompanied by hail, destroyed this beautiful speckled mousebird nest in Port Elizabeth.

In the days leading up to the disaster, my good friends had been watching the mousebirds build the nest, which was not finished.

There was no evidence of eggs or chicks.

You can see the size of the nest by comparing it with the tennis ball.

For the mousebirds it’s “Back to the drawing board”.

Very sad. but nature will bounce back. 🙂

Click here for more about mousebirds – probably the birds that lost this nest.

Speckled mousebird feeding

This beautiful photo of a speckled mousebird was taken in the garden of a good friend of mine in Port Elizabeth in May 2020.

What a long tail!

As can be seen from the photo, speckled mousebirds love fruit.

Here the mouse bird is enjoying a guava.

Professor Google tells me that mouse birds can be found all the way down Africa from around Ethiopia to South Africa. Read more here.

Belief System Power: Ask the Fox

(On a mobile please scroll down past the picture. Thank you.)

Things that happen to us make us happy or sad.

What is going on here?

It’s all about our belief system. Each person has their own belief system.

Take fox hunting with hounds.

Some people think it is cruel because their belief system tells them that it is cruel to tear a live animal to pieces.

On the other hand, some people’s belief system tells them foxes are vermin and it does not matter how they are exterminated.

So, you see it all depends on the belief system.

And we all have one.

I wonder what the fox thinks.

White eyes social distancing

This picture shows two South African white eyes leading by example by obeying the social distancing rule for white eyes (one inch). They are drinking sugar water. White eyes and their close relatives are small little birds found all over the world.

White eyes social distancing

This picture was taken late this afternoon in Port Elizabeth by a good, long time friend of mine. He is a great lover of wildlife and has gone on safari many times, not only here in South Africa, but also in Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe.

He is going to send me some more pictures of wild life and also some pictures of very interesting places he has visited, often way off the beaten track.

I know we will enjoy them.

Gecko Joy

This morning we received a visit from a gecko. What a joy!

We found the gecko on the duvet which is on our double bed.

I captured the gecko by using a glass and then sliding a piece of paper underneath,

Next, I put a centimeter tape next to the glass and took a picture. Really tiny!

Lastly, I put the gecko on the window sill, and off he went.

Free again!

See you again, gecko!
