Obesa Cactus Nursery Graaff-Reinet

On 16 February 2018 we were fortunate to visit the very famous Obesa Cactus Nursery in Graaff-Reinet, South Africa. The owner Johan was very welcoming and informative.

The extensive display of Cacti was really beautiful. Stunning in fact.

I will let some of my photos speak for themselves. Enjoy!

The Old Lady and the tiny Bird: A Lesson

Photo by Chris Czermak on Pexels.com

Once upon a time in a beautiful valley in the mountains of Europe there was a small village. In the village lived an old lady. She had the reputation for being very wise. People in the village often used to go to her and ask her for advice.

In the same village there also lived two young boys. Despite the fact that they were not living in the age of Professor Google, they nevertheless had reached the age of infinite wisdom. There was not much they did not know (or so they thought).

One day the two boys decided to test the wisdom of the old lady to see how smart she really was. They were sure they could catch her out. Easily. This is what they did.

They caught a small bird. A bird so small it could fit into the palm of their hands. They told their friends about their plan. “That old lady does not know much. She is really old fashioned. Here is what we are going to do. I am going to put this bird in the palm of my hands. Then we are going to visit the old lady. We will tell her that I have a tiny bird hidden in my hands. Then I am going to ask her if the little bird in my hands is dead or alive. If she says the bird is dead I will open my hands and the bird will fly away. She will be proved wrong. If she says the bird is alive, I well crush the bird with my hands and show her the dead bird. She will be proved wrong. I wonder what the smart old lady will say. Whatever she says, she will be wrong. She can’t win!.”

The other children listening were very impressed with this clever plan to show the famous old lady could be wrong. They all trooped along with the two boys and the little bird to watch the old lady being caught out.

The two boys with the bird arrived at the old lady’s cottage. Plenty of other children were watching.

At the door of the cottage, the two boys presented their challenge to the old lady: “Tell us if the bird is alive or dead”

There was a hush. The old lady looked carefully at the two boys.

One of the watching children whispered, “She doesn’t know”.

At last the old lady spoke. “It is completely in your hands whether the bird will live of die. I repeat: The bird’s life is completely in your hands. It is your choice.”

There was just silence.

The two boys and the watching children were amazed at the old lady’s wise answer. It is a story they remembered and spoke about for the rest of their lives.

The take away

We all have great trans-formative power. When faced with a situation, good or bad, we have a choice. By what we do, we can make a situation better or worse. How a situation evolves is very much in our hands. Such is our power of transformation.Take care. Be safe.

The Salutation of the Dawn

No, this is not a recently discovered painting by Turner! It is a photo taken by our friend, artist Professor Estelle Marais. The picture is of sunrise over the harbour in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, on 7 June 2020.

Silhouetted against the rising sun is a harbour crane, affectionately described by Estelle as “The Harbour Giraffe walking into the sun this morning”.

Estelle always finds the welcoming dawn encouraging and inspiring.

This wonderful photograph is a powerful reminder of Kalidasa’s greatly loved poem “Look to this Day”:

Look To This Day

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!

Thank you Kalidasa and Estelle

Howie Gardiner – Fond Memories

Howie Gardiner, the Zimbabwean First Class cricketer died on 19 June 2018. We both went to Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Bulawayo and played together in the first cricket team. We were very good friends. I last saw him in London a few years ago.

One memory about Howie I remember will remain with me for the rest of my life.

It was 1962. Our last school year. We were playing against Gifford Tech. It was the last ball of the day. Gifford Tech were 9 down. Howie was fielding close to the batsman at silly mid off or silly mid on. The bowler ran in and bowled.. The ball hit the batsman on the pads. He was plumb lbw. Up went the appeal. The umpire was CBC’s Brother Thackaberry. His decision was immediate: “Out”.

But we did not win. The decision was reversed. Why?

Because Howie turned round immediately and told us “He snicked it”. Only Howie heard the snick. The batsman was given “not out”. And so the match ended in a draw.

Such was the measure of the man, Howie Gardiner.

Rest In Peace Howie.

“All shall be well, all manner of thing shall be well.”

The Smoke the Thunders

“The Smoke that Thunders” is a translation of what the local people call the Victoria Falls.

As the mighty Zambezi River in central Africa hurls itself into the deep abyss there is indeed the sound of thunder.

And the smoke? That is the spray going high into the sky like real smoke from a long line of fires. This “smoke” can be seen from miles away.

The spray coming down creates a 24/7 rain forest where you get drenched without a rain coat.

One of the wonders of the world? Of course! But I am biased. This magnificent display of nature’s power is in the land where I was born: Southern Rhodesia (since renamed Zimbabwe).

I first saw the smoke and heard the thunder when I was 9 years old in 1953.

I will never forget seeing it for the first time.

What a wonderful experience.What a wonderful country.

Crab saved on the golf course

Picture John Bartels

While exercising our German Shepherd on a local golf course late this afternoon we came upon this large crab. You can see how big the crab was by comparing it with the golf cap (yes it is a Master’s cap. Bought on the Wednesday practice day).

Now, back to the crab! It was on a fairway between two small dams/water hazards. Not a safe place for the crab. Plenty of other dogs around. At least 70 meters to the safety of the nearest dam.

The crab became quite defensive when it realized I had taken an interest in it. Stood up! Waved its pincers at me. “Watch it, you with the iPhone!”

Good luck was on the side of the crab. A fellow dog walker who is a nature lover then arrived. She was kind enough to take off her jacket and use it to pick up the crab. She took it to the nearer of the two small dams where it was released. Away from danger at last! The crab scuttled off and hid among some rocks about 2 paces from the water.”You can’t get me now!”

Using “Page Break” in WordPress Block

“Page Break” is a really useful function for long WP articles. It allows you to create linked pages in your post. No more scrolling.

Try this. Bear in mind I am a “newbie” to WordPress. I have become immediate fan of Block editing.

Here goes (On desktop with Windows 10 using a mouse):

I suggest you copy, paste and print the list and have it next to you when you test run on your WP site. It’s actually very easy!

  • Open your WP site.
  • Left click Write.
  • For Add title type TEST.
  • Left click + (plus).
  • Left click “Paragraph”.
  • Type a paragraph of anything – about 3 lines long. Length does not matter but make it look like a paragraph.
  • Press Enter.
  • Another + (plus) comes up.
  • Left click on the + (plus.)
  • Left click on Page Break.
  • The page break appears.
  • Left click to get + (plus).
  • Left click on Paragraph.
  • Type another paragraph of junk – about 3 lines.Length does not matter but make it look like a paragraph.
  • Left click Save Draft.
  • Left click Preview.
  • Be amazed! Up comes the first page. At the bottom left is “1 2”. This is the page linking. Left click on 2 and you jump to the second page. And there at the bottom left of page 2 is the link back to page 1.
  • Obviously great for long articles.
  • Thank you WordPress!

Enjoy.

Keep safe.
